In addition to the Court Chapel, another three chapels could be found in Hofburg.
Josephskapelle or St Joseph’s chapel (also called Kammerkapelle or the chamber chapel) was situated in the Leopoldine wing to the north-west. Today, the office of the Federal President of Austria occupies this wing; the rooms there are not open to the public.
As the nearest shrine to the Imperial apartments, Marianne chooses St Joseph’s chapel for her private prayer. Her encounter with Count Khevenhüller (who is, similarly, looking for seclusion in his anxiety) took place in the ‘old’ chapel, with the original altarpiece depicting the death of St Joseph. The chapel was completely renovated in 1772, after which it obtained its present look.
Another chamber chapel for intimate meditation was located in the Swiss Court. It was built for Empress Dowager Eleonora Magdalena (mother of Karl VI, or Marianne’s great-grandmother) in 1712. A third small chapel was to be found in the Amalienburg, the part of the palace connecting the Leopoldine wing to the State Chancellery wing.
