Chapter 28 – The Eyewitnesses of Prince Schwarzenberg’s Death

According to the investigation report, those present at the site of Prince Schwarzenberg’s accident were thoroughly questioned. Three of them stand out for their direct impressions, which encompass the crucial moments of the tragic event — all authentic and grounded in first-hand observation.

The first, Johann Georg Reinhard, identified as “the hunting master in the service of the Prince”, provides a genuine account of what took place — rendered here in a question-and-answer form. The second witness, the surgeon Anton Hautzinger, contributes his professional opinion on the Prince’s injuries and his almost non-existent prospect of survival in a letter written and signed in his own hand. Finally, the Prince’s personal valet, Viktor Jaus, recounts the further course of his master’s final hours.

For literary purposes, I have refined the style and tone of each witness in keeping with his profession and social standing: plain and unsentimental for Master Reinhard, formal and polished for Doctor Hautzinger, and simple yet imbued with suppressed emotion for the valet Jaus.
