The official commission established to investigate Prince Schwarzenberg’s death recorded his last words. Admittedly, these were not taken directly from the Prince’s mouth but were related by several eyewitnesses present at his deathbed, such as Doctor Hautzinger and the valet Viktor Jaus. All the statements they provided coincide and complement one another, and correspond with the course of events and the circumstances known from other sources. This leaves little reason to doubt the quality and reliability of their testimonies.
Altogether, five remarks by Prince Schwarzenberg were documented in the report. In two of them, the Prince expressed concern for the Emperor’s wellbeing and state of mind. In another two, he complained of his miserable condition and entrusted his fate to the Lord. The longest remark was dedicated to his wife and underage son: the Prince blessed them and gave general directions for their future arrangements in life.
The last words of the dying Prince make a moving reading. They convey a devout Christian’s hope for heavenly grace and his heartfelt concern for those he was about to leave behind.
