19 January – A loyal queen in exile

Isabella of Austria, the younger sister of Emperor Charles V and the wife of Christian II of Denmark, passed away on 19 January 1526.

Her short life was overshadowed by her husband’s radical confrontation with the Danish nobility, which led to his deposition and exile in 1523. The Danish nobility, eager to maintain good relations with the powerful House of Habsburg, was willing to make several concessions to Isabella — but the Queen chose instead to follow her exiled husband, along with their three surviving children.

During the few years left to her, Isabella travelled from court to court seeking support for her husband’s restoration. In Germany, she developed sympathies for Protestantism and is said to have received Protestant communion on one occasion. However, her family urged her not to express these views publicly.

Isabella died at the age of twenty-four. Only two of her six children — both daughters — reached adulthood and were raised at the court of Margaret of Austria, Governess of the Netherlands. Only one of them, Christina, Duchess of Lorraine, had children of her own.
