Chapter 3 – The Protagonist’s Personality

The aspiration to depict a historical personality in all their ambiguity and ambivalence is unquestionably a challenge for an author. Fortunately, Archduchess Marianne receives a visitor — her confessor, Father Franz — who, in addition to gently acquainting her with recent political developments, brings comfort and reassurance to his ward.

Having endured a serious crisis, Marianne’s mind is in a fragile state. She is mercilessly questioning herself about the meaning and purpose of her life. It is precisely here that Father Franz, in his quiet and sincere manner, offers spiritual support and guidance. Unbeknownst to her, Marianne is on the verge of discovering her true character and talents, gradually preparing her mind for serious intellectual endeavour.

However, I cannot help mentioning the online astrological natal charts of the entire Imperial family, including Marianne, created by an unknown author. Knowing the Empress’s strict attitude towards esotericism, I am not entirely sure this method would have met with her approval. Yet for those familiar with the field, the charts may offer an intriguing exercise in attempting to decipher the Imperial personalities.
