19 November – A quiet life, a clear mind

Archduchess Maria Anna of Habsburg-Lorraine, my protagonist, passed away on 19 November 1789. The details of her life have been discussed throughout this webpage.

Unmarried and childless, Marianne lived a withdrawn life at the Imperial court in Vienna until the death of her mother, Maria Theresa, in 1780. In the final decade of her life, she relocated to the convent of St Elisabeth in Klagenfurt. She did not take vows but lived there as a secular resident. Her substantial personal income enabled her to support the local community and devote herself to her scientific interests. In Klagenfurt, the Archduchess was surrounded by a circle of like-minded individuals who shared her interests, and she formed close friendships with the nuns. I am firmly convinced that she spent the happiest years of her life there.

Having been frail throughout her life, Marianne passed away at the age of 51. In accordance with her wishes, she was buried in the convent, where her epitaph can be seen to this day.
